Although it is less common of a problem than it used to be, counterfeit US currency is still a growing problem around the world, as it is fraud plain and simple. The best way to detect it is to know all the facts about genuine US or foreign currency. The process of producing high-quality counterfeit money is long and requires great skill. Federal Reserve and Treasury experts cautiously estimate that about $700 million "worth" of counterfeit money is circulating alongside the real stuff.

Counterfeit Money Punishment

Existing law provides that any person who makes, passes, or publishes, with the intent to defraud, any fictitious or altered bill, note or check purporting to be authentic, is guilty of forgery, punishable as an alternate misdemeanor/ felony. A misdemeanor violation is punishable up to one year in county jail; a felony violation is punishable by 16 months, or 2 or 3 years in state prison.
